Yak Bone Ceramic Portable Cup

The design of this portable cup is inspired by the unique ecological environment and cultural background of Qumarlêb County on the Qinghai Plateau. It draws on how local typical animals yak and Zashijia Tibetan sheep look like, particularly in the shape of the yak and bull horns on the heatproof handle of the cup side. Unlike traditional bone ceramic, this product is sourced from the crushed yak bone, with a warm, soft white glaze formed on the surface, offering a restrained and silky visual and tactile texture. In the context of discussing this design project, the designer has to be aware of the significant role of Qumalai County in environmental conservation, as it is geographically located in crucial conservation area of the sources of Three Rivers, the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang rivers. The local economy heavily relies on natural animal husbandry, with limited economic value from cattle and sheep. The processing of meat and hides can result in the generation of waste, including yak bones and yak feces, which in turn poses a burden on local public sanitation systems. To address this, the design team proposes converting yak dung into biofuel and grinding yak bones as crushed bone. The development of a bone ceramic portable cup that combines ecological benefits and cultural heritage has resulted in the creation of an additional source of income for local residents, while promoting the unique cultural characteristics of the region. Surprisingly, many people remain unaware of the significance of ecological preservation in Hoh Xil and Qumarlêb County. The designers aspire to use and share this travel tea set as a means to communicate the importance of ecological protection in the region, thereby raising public awareness and seeking support for local conservation efforts. They are also committed to using their best endeavors towards the local economic development for poverty alleviation.
