The Yale Peabody Museum Interactive Experience is a network of digital installations integrated throughout the museum’s renovated galleries, designed to translate Yale’s natural science research into accessible and engaging public experiences.

Conceived as part of the museum’s full-scale reopening, the experience extends interpretation beyond traditional labels and static displays. Across 15 strategically placed kiosks, digital media introduces visitors to the stories behind the artifacts—how specimens were discovered, studied, and understood—making visible the scientific processes that connect evidence to knowledge.

Rather than functioning as standalone screens, the interactives are embedded within the physical exhibition environment. Each installation is tailored to its gallery context, visually aligned with surrounding displays, and structured to complement artifacts without competing for attention. Through a combination of imagery, motion, spatial layout, and layered content, the experience supports both quick browsing and deeper exploration of complex scientific narratives.

As a public-facing educational platform, the system was designed to accommodate a broad and diverse audience. It supports visitors across age groups and knowledge levels, from first-time museum visitors to subject-matter enthusiasts, while prioritizing clarity, accessibility, and intuitive interaction. Content is structured to reduce cognitive barriers, enable self-guided learning, and encourage curiosity-driven exploration.

Impact & Outcomes
Since reopening, the Yale Peabody Museum has welcomed over 415,000 visitors in its first year, representing a 220% increase in attendance. Within this renewed visitor experience, the interactive system plays a critical role in how audiences engage with scientific content. By transforming complex research into approachable, layered narratives, the design increases dwell time, supports deeper understanding, and enables visitors to form clearer connections between artifacts and the science behind them. The project demonstrates how thoughtfully integrated digital experiences can extend the educational value of physical exhibitions while maintaining spatial and visual harmony.
