The idea of creating an indoor oasis traces back to the COVID-19 pandemic, which deeply affected my hometown of Wuhan, China. The World Health Organization’s statement in 2022 that a 25% increase in global depression during the pandemic underscored the vital need for mental well-being solutions. Plants are scientifically proven to benefit both physical and mental health. However, for apartment dwellers like myself, limited space hindered the enjoyment of a variety of plants. Tomo comes to life as a holistic solution that integrates cutting-edge 3D Printing technology, sustainable practices, and a rhythm of nature, which fosters well-being and serenity in the spaces we inhabit.
The journey began with extensive research, exploring the pain points of growing indoor plants, interior design trends, and the principles of plant growth. Ethnographic studies revealed the emotional connections people forge with their plants, shaping our understanding of their well-being needs. Interviews allowed us to grasp the specific pain points people encountered in nurturing indoor plants. The integration of cutting-edge 3D Printing technology played a pivotal role in bringing the design to life. This process involved a meticulous iteration of designs, testing various structures, and exploring the technology's capabilities to achieve the desired complexity. Collaborating with plant enthusiasts, we fine-tuned the design based on their valuable feedback. A commitment to sustainability led us to choose a plant-based recyclable material that aligns seamlessly with our mission.
Tomo provides robust vertical support for plants, fostering a neat indoor oasis. Its modular design adapts to different plant sizes, allowing it to grow seamlessly with the plants. The effortless click-and-twist mechanism underwent rigorous testing to ensure adaptability, making the process of adding modules enjoyable. Offering multiple diameters, heights, and color series, Tomo provides a fully customizable and delightful journey for plant enthusiasts. Moreover, Tomo goes beyond support; it's a catalyst for growth, encouraging the plants' vertical ascent with ample room for aerial roots. The generative pattern around the pole accommodates the diverse sizes of aerial roots, embracing the randomness inherent in plant life.
