The GalactiGym is a wearable fitness device developed to help astronauts maintain muscle and bone health in a microgravity setting. The device offers a flexible and space-saving exercise solution for the moon base with a body-fitting training suit combined with adjustable resistance bands, compared to the bulky traditional fitness equipment on the International Space Station (ISS).
Because leg muscles deteriorate faster in weightlessness, our wearable focuses on lower body training with a parametric design that utilizes Amoeba technology to optimize the structure and reduce waste while ensuring usability of the device. The wearable uses an adjustable high-resistance elastic band to simulate gravity training and increase muscular endurance, and a flexible sensor that recovers kinetic energy during exercise and converts it into electrical energy to power the wearable, thus increasing energy consumption and reducing dependence on external energy sources.
Prototype studies have demonstrated that GalactiGym is effective at maintaining and developing muscle strength. Currently, the project is still in the conceptual stage, but in the future it is expected to provide not only reliable health support for astronauts, but also an efficient fitness management program for lunar residents.
