OceanLung is an immersive wearable that transforms the invisible crisis of ocean deoxygenation into a tangible human experience. By restricting airflow in response to rising CO₂ and pollution levels, it allows users to feel the suffocation marine life endures as oxygen disappears from the sea. What begins as a simple act of breathing becomes a visceral encounter with environmental decline—turning invisible data into a powerful lesson in empathy and awareness.

The product reveals a critical but often unseen reality: since the 1950s, ocean oxygen levels have declined by roughly two percent, creating vast “dead zones” where marine life can no longer survive. For crabs, fish, and countless other species, oxygen loss means weakened bodies, disrupted life cycles, and collapsing ecosystems. While humans rarely notice the air we breathe, this deprivation is a daily struggle beneath the surface.

OceanLung translates environmental data into a sensory narrative, reframing sustainability through embodied experience. Built with reusable components, sensors, and silicone air pockets shaped like crab claws, the wearable integrates technology and symbolism to express the fragility of marine ecosystems under acidification. Its responsive system—driven by microcontrollers and air pumps—demonstrates how human activity directly influences underwater oxygen levels and marine survival.

More than a wearable, OceanLung functions as a public awareness tool—an educational and participatory medium that connects personal sensation with planetary data. By engaging the body’s most primal rhythm—breath—it transforms empathy into action, inspiring reflection, dialogue, and collective responsibility for environmental health.

By making the invisible visible and the distant immediate, OceanLung reimagines wearable design as a catalyst for social consciousness and ecological change—empowering people to breathe with awareness and act toward a more sustainable future.
