What does it mean to store something and what does it mean to be seen? Domestic storage is almost always designed to disappear. Cabinets close, shelves fill, and the things we store and the things that are part of ourselves are seen as clutter to be managed, not as proof of what we are.

This piece, named Palgak, meaning octagon in Korean, is an alternative. In traditional East Asian cosmology, the octagon marks a profound transition. It sits between the square of earthly reason and the circle of enlightenment, symbolizing the human element connecting the two. It is a state near completion, by which thought becomes physical in its form.

Palgak embodies this philosophy in a stackable storage system made of wood and aluminum. It consists of three vertically stacked octagonal units that alternate between solid and void. Each solid volume acts as a fully enclosed storage compartment, and distinctly architectural in its weight. On the other hand, each void is an open frame, a curated space where an object is placed, seen, and allowed to remain an active participant in the room rather than vanishing into it.

The selected materials reinforce this duality. Wood gives the solid volumes warmth and mass, allowing them to read as small rooms or containers with genuine physical presence. Aluminum frames the voids with sharp precision, defining the space without filling it. Together, they form a constant, breathing rhythm of contain, reveal, contain, reveal.

When stacked, these units form a vertical landscape. It is a storage system, a display structure and a spatial diagram where a person organizes what is important to them. As the simple geometry is so easily flexible, the overall scale can be adjusted based on the environment and personal needs. This form suggests transition rather than fixed resolution.

Palgak is a meditation on the balance between privacy and display. It’s not just a functional solution to clutter, but a claim that storage itself can be an ongoing form of individual expression.
