1. Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.

I am Mahzad Yousefi, a veterinarian and emergency manager from Iran who recently moved to the USA. My journey has been fueled by a dedication to animal care and crisis management, and I am excited to apply my expertise in a new setting.

2. What does “design” mean to you?

In my point of view, design is like a lifecycle, a lifecycle just like ours; birth, growth, and death. When a designer starts to create a design he or she is giving birth to an idea and bringing it to life! Every design has its unique name just like we do. This process takes days and months; for the designer to initiate, the design to be completed, till the day in which the designer officially announces it done.

3. To you, what makes a “good” design?

In my view, innovation has the power to transform any design or product, making it unique, inimitable, and highly desirable. This creative approach not only enhances appeal but also sets the product apart in a competitive market.

4. Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design is currently in the conceptual phase, but I am eagerly anticipating the day it becomes a reality. The Veterinary Mobile Package (VMP) represents a groundbreaking solution for veterinarians, offering a fully portable clinic that can be effortlessly transported to various locations.

This innovative design is intended to support veterinarians in conducting general examinations and responding to emergencies and disasters, ensuring they have all the necessary tools and resources readily available, no matter where they are needed.

5. Tell us about your design process.

The inspiration for this idea struck me during my first semester in the healthcare emergency management program at Boston University. Initially, I created a very rudimentary sketch of the concept. Over time, I refined and enhanced the design using various software and applications.

It's important to note that I didn't do this alone, I received invaluable assistance from highly skilled professionals who provided their expertise and guidance throughout the development process. Their contributions were instrumental in evolving the initial sketch into a comprehensive and innovative design.

6. Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

No, this design is far from being a random idea; it stems from a genuine need and is created by someone who comprehends it from multiple angles. As both a veterinarian and an emergency manager, I possess a unique perspective that enables me to recognize the crucial necessity for such a solution.

The Veterinary Mobile Package (VMP) is crafted with these dual insights in mind, ensuring it effectively addresses the practical challenges veterinarians encounter in diverse situations.

7. Congratulations! As the winner of the 2024 NY Product Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

This is no ordinary prize for me! This is the first I tried to believe in myself and have the courage to share my ideas. When I was aware that the committee liked the design and was announced as a winner, I was really glad and realized that should believe in myself and the path that I chose more and more every day.

8. What was the biggest challenge with this project?

Unfolding the baggage to transform it into an examination desk! Initially, I had numerous ideas swirling in my mind, but I ultimately selected the one that was the most straightforward and convenient.

This choice was made to ensure ease of use and practicality, focusing on creating a solution that could be seamlessly integrated into a veterinarian’s routine, whether in everyday practice or during emergencies.

9. How has winning an award developed your practice/career?

It was a new door to my way of success in both the positions i hold as veterinarian and an emergency and crisis manager.

10. What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

Statewide, Tech Focus, Global

11. Who has inspired you in your life and why?

Me and myself! My biggest inspiration was myself because I have always believed in my ability to create innovative solutions. My determination to address practical challenges and improve the efficiency of veterinary care drove me to envision and refine the Veterinary Mobile Package (VMP).

12. What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
