What makes jewelry precious?
The Volant Frill Earrings begin by challenging two conventions: the perceived nature of metal and the traditional hierarchy of jewelry.
Frills are born from softness. Fabric folds, bends, gathers, and responds to movement, creating fluid rhythms that appear almost weightless. Metal, by contrast, is perceived as rigid, cold, and permanent. Volant brings these opposing qualities together, exploring whether the visual sensation of softness can exist independently from a soft material. Rather than simply reproducing the appearance of fabric, the design translates its movement into metal. Sweeping folds rise, overlap, compress, and recede, capturing the impression of fabric suspended in motion.
The work also reconsiders the role of precious metal itself. In traditional fine jewelry, metal often serves as the structure that holds and presents gemstones. Volant deliberately reverses this relationship. There are no gemstones. Metal is not the setting; metal itself is the protagonist.
Its brilliance is created through form rather than added ornament. Broad reflective surfaces contrast with intricate textures and organically shaped openwork, producing changing relationships between light and shadow, solid and void, smoothness and complexity. As the viewing angle changes, light moves across the folds and penetrates the openings, giving the static metal a sense of continuous movement and depth.
The complex geometry was developed through ZBrush digital sculpting, allowing the fluid macro-scale folds and intricate micro-scale details to be conceived as one continuous sculptural composition. Hollow construction and integrated openwork were then used to preserve the dramatic external volume while selectively reducing material and weight.
Importantly, the openwork is not merely a hidden engineering solution. Its pattern follows the rhythm of the surrounding folds, allowing weight reduction itself to become part of the visual identity of the piece.
Volant proposes a different definition of preciousness: one created not only by the rarity of what is added to jewelry, but by imagination, craftsmanship, and the transformation of the material itself.
Softness without fabric. Brilliance without gemstones.
