PureAura is a low-cost, high-efficiency air purifier designed to improve air quality in small spaces. Due to high rental costs, about 120,000 low-income families in Hong Kong live in sub-divided units (SDUs) with no windows or poor air circulation. Many SDUs are less than 150 sq. ft. in size with toilet and kitchen all in the same space. Air pollution causes 43% of lung cancer deaths. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable as they spend more time indoors. Designed around Humanitarian Technology principles, PureAura, made of recycled material, is compact in size, cheap to build, easy to maintain and scientifically proven effective.

The concerns surrounding subdivided flats in Hong Kong have led to extensive public attention. Community groups and research teams are dedicated to supporting improvement efforts. Lingnan University's Lingnan Entrepreneurship Initiative is focused on advancing humanitarian technology for the betterment of humanity. As part of their pilot project, we have developed a low-cost mini air purifier designed explicitly for sub-divided flats.

The research team conducted field tests on the air purifier, proving its effectiveness in reducing indoor delicate PM 2.5 by 80%, meeting the World Health Organization's revised Global Air Quality Guidelines for 2021. Key features of the air purifier include high efficiency, small size, and low power consumption, catering to the needs of sub-divided flat residents.

With dimensions of less than 20cm and a weight of 660 grams, the mini air purifier can be placed anywhere in small subdivided units. It is made of lightweight and easy-to-assemble plastic parts, offering convenience and space-saving benefits. The production cost is around US$ 15, and pair filter replacement costs around US$ 4 and can operate for 40 hours on a 10000mAh USB power bank. The air purifier is also suitable for developing countries due to its compact size, affordability, and portability. The research team is collaborating with universities in the Philippines to explore cost-effective ways of improving indoor air quality. The entire design and assembly processes are conducted by the LU humanitarian technology research team, showcasing Hong Kong's innovation, technology, and commitment to global sustainable development.
