The Kollide helmet is an innovative head protection solution leveraging the full power of additive manufacturing to improve the players safety. Its liner system is made of 3D printed patented structures replacing the foam use in traditional helmet. It also features an injected shell and steel facemask that were specifically designed to work along with the liner.
The liner components are printed with modified FDM 3D printer using flexible PU which offer better properties than other technologies or machines that cost 500 times more.
We also develop a matrix system to hold all those different lattice elements, each lattice element being optimize for their position within the helmet.
Finally, we developed the system to optimize all the components: a platform that allows us to simulate different hypothesis that will guide the develop and optimization. All components have been optimized through virtual testing (simulation) to find the best applicable material or structure.
Our helmet that is lighter, more breathable and has better protection than current helmet on the market.
This project is the joint effort of a Montreal based consortium in order to provide a complete helmet to the NFL Helmet Challenge launched in 2019. The objective of the NFL was to significantly reduce the occurrence of concussions on the football fields using the HPS test (Helmet Performance Score) inspired from all the latest academic research.
